What a Dental Checkup Does for You
Most dental problems develop gradually and without obvious symptoms. A cavity doesn't announce itself. Gum disease progresses quietly. A crack in a tooth can worsen over months before it becomes painful.
Regular checkups give Dr. Chitkara the opportunity to find and address those issues early, before they require more involved treatment. You'll leave knowing exactly where your dental health stands and what, if anything, needs attention.

What You'll Know Before You Leave
If anything beyond routine care is recommended, Dr. Chitkara schedules a separate no-charge consultation to review your case properly, with enough time to look at images together and work through your options before you commit to anything.
Care That Builds Over Time
Tracking your oral health across years of visits makes it possible to spot trends that a single appointment can't reveal: gradual bone changes, a crack that's slowly deepening, or gum recession that's worth monitoring. That kind of continuity changes what's possible in your care.

If Dental Visits Make You Nervous
Dr. Chitkara asks about your history before anything begins, explains each step before he takes it, and stops when you need him to. If you'd like to talk through your concerns before booking, we're happy to do that first.
Curious If Your Insurance Is Accepted?
How Often Should I Go to the Dentist?
For most patients, twice-yearly visits provide the right level of monitoring and prevention. Some situations call for more frequent care:
- Active gum disease or a history of periodontal treatment
- A higher-than-average cavity risk
- Ongoing orthodontic treatment
- Dry mouth, which reduces saliva and increases decay risk
- Certain medical conditions or medications that affect oral health
Dr. Chitkara will let you know what schedule makes sense for your specific situation. The goal is to stay ahead of problems before they require more involved treatment.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy Between Visits
What you do at home between appointments has a direct impact on your oral health. Small, consistent habits make a meaningful difference over time:
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Floss once a day to remove buildup between teeth where a toothbrush can't reach
- Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which erode enamel gradually
- Stay hydrated — saliva is your mouth's natural defense against bacteria and decay
- Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn
- Wear a mouthguard during contact sports to protect against impact damage

What to Expect During Your Dental Checkup
Every appointment at Northwest Dental Studio follows the same thorough process. Here's what happens during your visit.
Teeth Cleaning
A professional cleaning removes tartar and plaque buildup that brushing and flossing can't fully address on their own, particularly along the gumline where buildup contributes most to cavities and gum disease over time.
Digital X-Rays
Low-radiation digital imaging gives Dr. Chitkara a clear view beneath the surface of your teeth and along the supporting bone, catching decay, infections, and developing issues that aren't visible during a clinical exam alone.
Dental Exam
Dr. Chitkara evaluates every tooth individually and assesses your gum health, bite, and any existing restorations. Intraoral cameras put his findings on a screen in front of you in real time, so everything can be shown rather than just described.
Oral Cancer Screening
A visual and physical examination of the soft tissues in your mouth, lips, tongue, throat, and neck. It takes only a few minutes and is included at every checkup, for every patient.
Dentistry That Puts You at Ease

An Environment You'll Actually Enjoy
Coffee when you arrive, your choice of music, Netflix overhead, and a weighted blanket in the chair. Every detail was thought through so you can just relax.
We Accept Your Insurance
We accept most major dental insurance plans and offer financing for anything beyond coverage. We'll walk you through your benefits before your first visit.

Everything Under One Roof
Cleanings, implants, cosmetic work, Invisalign, and more. You won't be referred out or asked to start over with someone new.
We Go at Your Pace

Frequently Asked Questions
Does insurance cover checkups and cleanings?
Most plans cover preventive care at little or no cost to you. Book online or give us a call and we'll verify your benefits before your first visit.
What is an oral cancer screening?
A visual and physical examination of the soft tissues in and around your mouth, throat, and neck. It's included at every checkup, takes only a few minutes, and is one of the most effective tools for early detection.
When should children start coming in?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in.
Do you see patients with gum disease?
Yes. Northwest Dental Studio provides scaling and root planing, pocket reduction, and ongoing periodontal maintenance for patients managing gum disease.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in a long time?
Come in. Dr. Chitkara will assess where things stand, explain what he finds, and build a plan that addresses priorities first. There's no judgment here.
Is it safe to get X-rays at every visit?
Yes. Digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of traditional film. Dr. Chitkara takes them based on clinical need, not on a fixed schedule.
What happens if Dr. Chitkara finds a cavity?
He'll show you what he found, explain your options, and walk you through next steps before anything is scheduled. Nothing moves forward without your understanding and agreement.
What's the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A routine cleaning addresses buildup above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is a therapeutic procedure that reaches further below the gumline to treat active gum disease.
Do dental checkups hurt?
A routine exam and cleaning should not be painful. Some patients experience mild sensitivity during cleaning. If you're uncomfortable at any point, let us know and we'll adjust.
How long does a routine checkup take?
New patient appointments typically run 60 to 90 minutes, including X-rays, a full exam, and a cleaning. Established patient visits are usually shorter.
