Skip the Second Appointment
A dental crown is one of the most common restorations in dentistry — and traditionally, one of the most drawn-out. Two appointments, weeks apart, with a temporary crown in between. At Northwest Dental Studio, the entire process happens in a single visit using CEREC in-office milling technology. You leave the same day with a permanent, custom-fitted crown.

No Temporary Crown to Manage
Temporary crowns are uncomfortable, prone to coming loose, and require you to modify how you eat and brush for weeks. Same-day crowns eliminate that entirely. Your permanent restoration is placed before you leave, so there's nothing to protect, adjust around, or worry about in the meantime.
One Appointment, One Doctor
Your crown is designed, milled, and placed by Dr. Chitkara in a single visit. There's no handoff to a lab, no back-and-forth on fit, and no starting over if something needs adjusting. The entire process stays in one place, with one doctor who knows your case.

A Result Built to Last
CEREC crowns are milled from high-strength ceramic blocks selected to match the color and translucency of your natural teeth. The result is a durable, precisely fitted restoration that looks and functions like the tooth it's replacing.

When Is a Crown Recommended?
A crown is used to restore a tooth when damage or decay has compromised enough of its structure that a filling is no longer sufficient. Common reasons Dr. Chitkara may recommend a crown include:
- A tooth with extensive decay that can't support a filling
- A cracked or fractured tooth that needs structural reinforcement
- A tooth that has broken or worn down significantly
- A tooth following a root canal, which needs protection to prevent fracture
- Replacement of an old crown that has failed or no longer fits properly
Dr. Chitkara will explain exactly what he's seeing and why a crown is the right solution before any treatment is scheduled.

How Long Do Same-Day Crowns Last?
CEREC crowns are made from high-strength ceramic, the same class of material used in traditional lab-fabricated porcelain crowns. With proper care, a well-placed crown can last 15 years or more.
Factors that affect longevity include:
- Oral hygiene habits, particularly cleaning along the gumline where the crown meets the tooth
- Grinding or clenching, which places excess force on restorations over time
- The location of the crown in the mouth; back teeth absorb more chewing force than front teeth
- Consistent dental checkups that allow Dr. Chitkara to monitor the crown's fit and condition over time

What to Expect During Your Same-Day Crown Appointmen
Exam and Treatment Planning
Dr. Chitkara begins with a thorough evaluation of the affected tooth, including X-rays to assess the extent of damage and confirm that a crown is the right restoration. He'll walk you through his findings and explain the procedure before anything begins.
Tooth Preparation
The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia and prepared by removing any decay and reshaping the structure to support a crown. This is the same preparation used for a traditional crown.
Digital Scan and Crown Design
A digital scan of the prepared tooth replaces traditional impressions entirely. No trays, no putty. Dr. Chitkara uses the scan to design your crown on-screen, adjusting the shape, size, and fit before sending it to the in-office milling unit.
Milling
The crown is milled from a ceramic block in the office while you wait. Most patients rest, watch TV, or decompress during this stage, which typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Fitting and Placement
Once milled, the crown is tried in for fit and bite. Any minor adjustments are made chairside. When everything is confirmed, the crown is permanently cemented and your appointment is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my crown needs adjustment after placement?
Minor adjustments to bite and fit are made chairside before the crown is cemented. If any issues arise after your appointment, contact us and we'll schedule a follow-up to assess and address them.
Does insurance cover same-day crowns?
Most dental insurance plans that cover traditional crowns also cover CEREC crowns, as the restoration itself is the same class of treatment. Coverage varies by plan. We're happy to verify your benefits before your appointment.
What's the difference between a crown an inlay and an onlay?
A crown covers the entire visible surface of the tooth above the gumline. An inlay restores damage contained within the cusps of a back tooth. An onlay covers one or more cusps but doesn't extend to the full crown. Dr. Chitkara recommends the most conservative restoration that adequately addresses the damage.
Can a same-day crown be done on any tooth?
CEREC crowns are well-suited for most teeth, including molars that absorb significant chewing force. Dr. Chitkara will assess your specific situation and confirm whether a same-day crown is the right option before your appointment begins.
How do I care for my crown after placement?
Care for a crown the same way you care for your natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss along the gumline where the crown meets the tooth, and attend regular checkups so Dr. Chitkara can monitor its condition over time. Avoid using the crowned tooth to bite hard objects like ice or hard candy.
What if I need a crown but also have dental anxiety?
Let us know when you book. Dr. Chitkara explains each step before he takes it and moves at your pace throughout the appointment. Sedation options are also available for patients who need additional support.
Is the crown procedure painful?
The tooth and surrounding area are numbed before preparation begins. Most patients experience no pain during the procedure. Some sensitivity is normal in the days following placement as the tooth settles, and typically resolves on its own.
Will my crown match my other teeth?
Yes. Dr. Chitkara selects a ceramic block matched to the color and translucency of your natural teeth. The finished crown is designed to blend with your surrounding dentition.
Is a same-day crown as durable as a traditional crown?
Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from high-strength ceramic, the same class of material used in lab-fabricated restorations. With proper care, a same-day crown can last 15 years or more.
How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
Most same-day crown appointments run two to three hours from start to finish, including exam, preparation, milling, and placement. The milling stage itself typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.
